Emma Kring grew up in Mohnton, Pennsylvania and earned her undergraduate degree in Environmental Science at Juniata College in Pennsylvania. She focused on large ungulate research after a semester abroad in Cork, Ireland studying wildlife ecology and spending two winters capturing white-tailed deer in Potter County, Pennsylvania.
Emma has worked with multiple ungulate species including white-tailed deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Mule deer, and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep. These positions focused on safe captures of adults and neonates along with monitoring population dynamics of the respective species. Exposure to different wildlife diseases in each position posed management questions that helped her realize her passion for wildlife disease ecology.
This M.S degree is in partnership with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS) at the University of Georgia where Emma will analyze forty years of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) survey data that SCWDS has collected from the Midwestern states. She will identify trends and other patterns observed in the data to aide improvement for better wildlife management strategies in EHD outbreaks for states in the Great Plains region. Emma’s M.S. will be dually completed with SCWDS and Warnell School of Forestry under the direction of Dr. Mark Ruder and Dr. Gino D’Angelo.
