Amanda Van Buskirk grew up in Toms River, New Jersey. She attended Monmouth University in West Long Branch, NJ, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics. She then went on to pursue her Masters of Science in Ecology at Penn State University. Her thesis focused on the localized management of white-tailed deer populations in the eastern United States and a method for estimating deer abundance using a combination of distance sampling techniques and resource selection analyses. Her PhD project will focus on structured decision making for deer management in the state of Georgia, and she will work under the direction of Dr. Gino D’Angelo, Dr. Clint Moore, and Dr. Bynum Boley. This project is a collaborative effort involving UGA, U.S. Geological Survey and Georgia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, and Georgia Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Division. Her work aims to evaluate data related to white-tailed deer management from multiple sources and develop a framework for data collection to guide deer management decisions. She also hopes to investigate opportunities for utilizing citizen science in deer management.
